Kigali — African City of Culture
In my first installment of 2025, I continue showcasing African Cities of Culture. This time, it is Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. Venue for the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), host of the FIFA World Congress, location of the second Pele stadium in Africa, and host of the 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
Among its other exploits as a MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events) destination, Kigali stands as a beacon of African culture, creativity, and innovation, embodying the rich heritage and vibrant spirit of the continent. Renowned as an African City of Culture, Kigali is not only the capital of Rwanda but also a thriving hub for arts, music, and cultural expression. The city’s dynamic blend of tradition and modernity is evident in its cultural festivals, world-class art galleries, and diverse culinary scene, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic African experience.
As an African City of Culture, Kigali celebrates its unique history while fostering a forward-looking vision of cultural excellence. Its clean, green, and organized environment reflects a commitment to sustainability, while its cultural landmarks, such as the Kigali Cultural Village, provide platforms for showcasing local and regional talent.
Kigali’s reputation as a cultural epicenter continues to grow, attracting artists, innovators, and visitors from across the globe.
Through its vibrant cultural scene, Kigali not only highlights the richness of African traditions but also inspires a shared vision of unity and progress on the continent. It is a city where culture thrives and innovation flourishes, setting an example for urban centers across Africa and beyond.
As a microcosm of Rwanda, Kigali’s ‘halo effects’ can be seen on the “Land of a Thousand Hills” (a nickname for Rwanda). Is it Kwita Izina? FIFA World Congress? CHOGM? The bid for Formula One, the twin-city with recently concluded Kwita Izina conservation event in Rwanda.
Rwanda is one of the most celebrated African nation brands, not only because of its sponsorship of major football clubs in Europe but also as one of the acclaimed innovation capitals of the world. Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills.
Its topography comprises several hills and valleys, and it is one of the ideal places to visit in Africa due to its natural beauty and wonders. These scenic endowments include the endangered mountain gorilla, majestic diversities of wildlife as well as extremely impressive mountain ranges.
The Great Lakes’ Safari website also argues that the proverbial ‘thousand hills’ are literally scattered through the nation — fertile, green and beautifully terraced — and the people, whose ancient culture comes to life through traditional music, songs and dance, are some of the world’s most charming and hospitable.
Interestingly, there is still more to explore: volcanic mountains, pristine lakes, numerous rivers, amazing birdlife, primates and wildlife, and a fascinating history.
