Town Meets Gown — East African Breweries Limited at the University of Kigali
University of Kigali’s Graduate School hosted Mr. Musoni Janvier, Country Manager of East African Breweries Limited (EABL) in the Great Lakes Region as Guest Speaker on Saturday, 12 March 2022. Mr. Musoni addressed Graduate Students in a Strategic Management class.
The Strategic Management Course is taught by Professor Nnamdi Madichie, Coordinator of UoK’s Centre for Economic Governance and Leadership (CEGL) and an expert with teaching and research interests in marketing and entrepreneurship. Students were concluding their group presentations on Michael Porter’s Seminal Article on “What is Strategy?” a comprehensive article which captures everything strategy — from operational effectiveness versus strategy, through issues around strategic fit and core competencies.
In his presentation, Mr. Musoni talked about issues related to strategy and competition in the alcoholic beverage market in Rwanda and the wider region. The presentation coincided with the last day of class and presented an opportunity for students to learn practical ways of deploying strategies. The subject took students on a journey through the different levels of strategy; corporate, business, functional and operational.
The Guest Speaker further talked about dominant industry players such Bralirwa and SKOL Breweries with operational plants in Rwanda and how EABL has survived competition despite the supposed disadvantage of not having a plant in Rwanda.
Overall, the presentation brought the course to an eventful conclusion, as students questioned the strategy of EABL considering the notable level of competition for market share in the industry.
