The 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards took place tonight in Manchester — read on for the full list of winners below.

The 30th anniversary of the ceremony was held at the city’s Co-Op Live Arena on Sunday (November 10) and was broadcast on MTV UK, Channel 5 and Pluto TV, and can be streamed on Paramount+ from Tuesday (November 12).

The show was hosted by Rita Ora for a record-breaking third time, while it also featured live performances from Benson Boone, RAYE, Shawn Mendes, Teddy Swims, The Warning, LE SSERAFIM, Peso Pluma, Tyla, Busta Rhymes and Pet Shop Boys.

The nominees were announced in October, and saw Taylor Swift lead the pack for the second year running, with a total of seven nods overall. Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Lisa and Ayra Starr were next in line with four nominations apiece.

The winners were chosen by fans’ votes on the EMAs website, aside from the Best Video award winner, who was selected by MTV.

Categories and Award Winners

I’ll kick this off with a narrative change. Come to think of it perhaps it should have been in alphabetical order anyway…

BEST AFROBEATS

Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, Tyla — WINNER

Celebrating African Talent on the World Stage: Changing the Narrative with Tyla

Nigerian media powerhouse, Arise News, recognises the triumph of South African sensation. According to a post on its website, entitled “South Africa’s Tyla Shines In African, R&B Categories At 2024 MTV EMAs”:

South African singer Tyla made a historic mark at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) after winning three major awards, including Best Afrobeats Artist, Best African Act, and Best R&B Artist. Her wins were a significant triumph, particularly as she surpassed leading Nigerian Afrobeats artists like Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr to clinch the Best Afrobeats Artist award.

It reads further, this time with a commentary on the Best African Act category, that “Tyla outshone fierce competition from Nigerian musician Asake, South Africa’s DBN Gogo, and Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz, solidifying her reputation across the continent.”

Going further afield, to clinch a more global and open category, Tyla’s exploits were nothing short of phenomenal:

“…Tyla claimed the Best R&B Artist award, triumphing over American superstars Khelani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monèt. Nigerian Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr, despite four nominations, left the ceremony without an award. She was up for Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push but faced strong competition in all categories.”
